In the early morning hours of Saturday, September 8, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue’s Technical Rescue Team and Broward Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a man that had fallen or jumped into the Intracoastal Waterway from the Commercial Blvd. bridge. When rescuers arrived, the man was struggling in the water to stay afloat.

Technical Rescue Team member Kevin Meyers and Rescue 12 Lt. Robert Melendez dove into the dark, choppy waters to rescue the victim. Meyers and Melendez took a rescue harness to the victim, and were able to secure him in it. At the same time, Technical Rescue Team Capt. Mike Nugent devised a raising system, securing it underneath the bridge to hoist the victim to safety.

Thanks to the quick work of the Broward Sheriff’s Office firefighters and deputies, the victim was transported to the hospital, and was expected to survive. In the photo are: (L to R) FF/PM Gabe Frittitta, Capt. Mike Nugent, FF/PM Kevin Meyers, FF/PM Jimmy Mullin, Dep. Eric Weiner.
