FIRE DESTROYS SOUTHWEST RANCHES HOME

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue Capt. Ray Hoecherl watches for flare-ups following a late morning fire that destroyed a Southwest Ranches home. Around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, a passerby called 9-1-1 to report heavy smoke and flames coming from the single family home at 5000 SW 195 Ter. When Broward Sheriff firefighters arrived, there was fire blowing out of the front windows and through the roof. Firefighters made entry, searched for possible victims and extinguished the blaze in about 30 minutes. The family was not home at the time of the blaze, and six dogs and two horses were all safe and accounted for. The Southwest Ranches Volunteer Fire Department also responded. Three firefighters were treated for minor injuries, one for burns and the other two for heat-related symptoms. The Broward Sheriff Fire Marshal’s Bureau and State Fire Marshal spent the afternoon combing through the debris looking for the cause of the fire. They took samples from the scene and sent them to the State Fire Marshal’s lab near Tallahassee for analysis. The cause remains under investigation. The American Red Cross was assisting the family with temporary shelter and needs.
