Congratulations to Jean Ansourian (left) and Patricia Jordan, both from BSO’s Drug Court Treatment Division, on their recent graduation from the All-Star Leadership Academy. The academy is an innovative and original educational opportunity for mid- to senior-level managers in the human services professions. The nine-month curriculum was created to promote the personal and professional growth of community leaders within the behavioral healthcare system.

Acting Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti swore in 227 special process servers at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center in Ft. Lauderdale on Sept. 26, 2007.  Special process servers are used to officially deliver legal notices and papers, such as a summonses, to persons involved in the legal proceedings of a court or other administrative body.

BSO has administered the Special Process Server Program since 1985 when only 100 process servers were used. The program has steadily grown since then. Each SPS is required to take an annual test and pass a background investigation before being appointed to serve process and being sworn-in by the sheriff.

The employees from BSO’s Deerfield Beach District presented Sheriff Al Lamberti and Director Rick Schuster from the Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County with a check for $2,070 for the Sergeant Chris Reyka memorial fund. Employees donated their own money and much of the overtime pay they received while searching for Sgt. Reyka’s killer. The money donated will benfit the widow and children of Sgt. Reyka.

The City of Pompano Beach officially renamed the stretch of roadway on SW 3rd Street between Cypress Road and Dixie Highway for slain BSO Sgt. Chris Reyka during the weekly commission meeting on Tuesday, September 25. The roadway renaming honors the ultimate sacrifice Sgt. Reyka made in August in an effort to protect the Pompano Beach community.

In the early morning hours of Saturday, September 8, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue’s Technical Rescue Team and Broward Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a man that had fallen or jumped into the Intracoastal Waterway from the Commercial Blvd. bridge. When rescuers arrived, the man was struggling in the water to stay afloat.

Technical Rescue Team member Kevin Meyers and Rescue 12 Lt. Robert Melendez dove into the dark, choppy waters to rescue the victim. Meyers and Melendez took a rescue harness to the victim, and were able to secure him in it. At the same time, Technical Rescue Team Capt. Mike Nugent devised a raising system, securing it underneath the bridge to hoist the victim to safety.

Thanks to the quick work of the Broward Sheriff’s Office firefighters and deputies, the victim was transported to the hospital, and was expected to survive. In the photo are: (L to R) FF/PM Gabe Frittitta, Capt. Mike Nugent, FF/PM Kevin Meyers, FF/PM Jimmy Mullin, Dep. Eric Weiner.
